Diabetic Wound Care

What is diabetic wound care ?

The DWM, UAE Wound Care Center specializes in the treatment of chronic or non-healing wounds, which are defined as wounds or sores that have not significantly improved from conventional medical treatment. Wound care impacts all of us. It can start out as a cut or blister that just won’t heal to a surgical incision. It can be associated with certain medical conditions such as diabetes, poor circulation of blood or immobility. Non-healing wounds lead to poor quality of life and if untreated may lead to amputations. When wounds persist, a specialized approach is required for proper healing. Typically, a wound that does not respond to normal medical care within 30 days is considered a problem or chronic wound. The team at DWM can help. With the state-of-art treatments available, including debridement, Oxygen Therapy, dressing selection, special shoes, and patient education, people with chronic non-healing wounds now have a place they can trust.

SAVE A LIMB, SAVE A LIFE

85 percent of diabetic lower extremity amputations are preventable

The World Health Organization and the International Diabetes Foundation have stated that up to 85 percent of diabetic lower extremity amputations are preventable. Research estimates indicate that faulty wound healing and cutaneous foot ulcerations are contributing factors in 75 percent of these amputations.
A person with diabetes and one lower extremity amputation has a 50% chance of developing a limb-threatening condition on the contra-lateral limb within two years, and the five year mortality rate after diabetes-related lower extremity amputation is nearly 50%. This mortality rate is higher than many types of cancers. Lower extremity amputation results in disability and loss of independence, making it often more costly than limb salvage.
